The Proactive Outreach for the Health of Sexually Exploited Youth (POHSEY) started in early 2014 with a grant from the Healthier Wisconsin Partnership Program. Our goal was to improve the identification and treatment of youth involved in human trafficking by developing policies and procedures to improve and provide comprehensive health and mental health care throughout Milwaukee.

  • We created a profile of Milwaukee youth involved in trafficking, determined and addressed gaps in services and developed a list of specialized resources.
  • We prepared a modifiable electronic and paper-based screening tool and regularly update based on community input and findings,
  • We provided technical assistance and informational sessions to over 500 medical and mental health providers, advocates and other service providers, presented at Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin Grand Rounds and conducted workshops with national audiences including the National JUST Conference and North American Society for Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology (NASPAG) conference.
